Von Zinkernagel Receives 2005 ANAC Public Service Award
Deborah Von Zinkernagel, who has been with Pangaea since its founding in 2001, was recently chosen as 2005 recipient of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care (“ANAC”) Public Service Award. This award is one of ANAC's highest honors and was given to Deborah in recognition of outstanding achievement throughout her career related to advocacy for competent and compassionate public policy for individuals living with HIV disease. In addition, the award recognizes her faithful commitment to the inclusion of nursing as strategy to affect change both in the US and throughout the world. She was presented with the award on November 17, 2005 at ANAC’s annual meeting.
Founded in 1987 to address the specific needs of nurses working in HIV/AIDS, the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care has rapidly become a leader in the response to HIV disease and AIDS. With a highly regarded peer-reviewed journal, and an Annual Conference featuring national and international speakers and educational and scientific sessions on the latest developments in HIV nursing, ANAC is meeting the needs of nurses in HIV/AIDS care, research, prevention, and policy.
Deborah Von Zinkernagel has been with Pangaea Global AIDS Foundation since 2001. Her work has focused on program development for expansion of HIV/AIDS treatment capabilities in resource poor settings. Ms. von Zinkernagel, who has over 15 years of experience in developing policy and programs relating to HIV/AIDS, was deputy director of the Office of HIV/AIDS Policy at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. While at HHS, she served on the International Subcommittee of the White House HIV Policy Coordination Committee, participating in the development of the LIFE Initiative. Ms. von Zinkernagel was also a senior health advisor on HIV/AIDS to Sen. Edward Kennedy, Chairman of the Committee on Labor and Human Resources, from 1990 to 1995, where she was centrally involved in the development of the Ryan White CARE Act.
