Strategic Initiatives for 2008

Focusing on Underserved Populations

The coming year holds exciting prospects for Pangaea. We will be continuing our work with the Clinton Foundation in China and the Ukraine. In addition we will be launching the following new initiatives:

  • Treatment and treatment-based prevention for women, girls, and adolescents — creating a strengthened local HIV/AIDS treatment infrastructure to treat women, adolescents, and girls, including prevention that is linked to treatment.
  • Small and medium enterprises - creating an affordable HIV treatment model for workers in small and medium-sized local businesses (SMEs) in resource poor settings.
  • Mid-level providers - increasing the capacity of non-physician providers in resource poor settings to meet the growing need for HIV/AIDS care and treatment.
  • Injection drug users - creating new models for bringing injection drug users into care for both HIV/AIDS and their underlying addiction.

2007 Highlights

Assisting with National Scale-up of HIV/AIDS Treatment

Over the last six years Pangaea has partnered with the Clinton Foundation's HIV/AIDS Initiative to assist national governments in Africa, Asia and the Americas with the design and scale-up of national HIV/AIDS treatment programs. In 2007 we continued this work and expanded our efforts with injection drug use populations in China and Ukraine:

China

In China, we have been helping to develop training programs and establish HIV/AIDS clinics in Anhui and Yunnan provinces. In Yunnan, our work with Provincial and local officials has led to comprehensive models of care that reach from urban settings to rural villages, linking maternal child health, TB, and methadone treatment and community-based outreach with HIV treatment capacity.

Ukraine

In Ukraine, we are helping the Ministry of Health increase access to comprehensive HIV/AIDS and drug treatment -- with injection drug users ("IDUs") as the main target population. Core program components include rapid HIV testing, registration and procurement of methadone, development of an integrated HIV and drug treatment program for IDUs, and training of medical staff.
