In October of 2009, if all goes according to plan, 40 young Tanzanian men and women will complete a six-month training program and begin work as paramedical healthcare workers in their local communities, including rural settings where the need is high and treatment access is limited. If successful, this program will be expanded throughout Tanzania to train hundreds of new health care workers, many of whom will eventually pursue additional formal training in the health professions to expand their career options and to strengthen Tanzania ’s health workforce. This first training group is part of a demonstration project called The Youth Health Corps (YHC) for Integrated Prevention, Care and Treatment that is being developed by the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) in Dar a Salaam, in partnership with the Women’s Global Health Imperative (WGHI) at RTI International, and the Pangaea Global AIDS Foundation. Read more » Pangaea Global AIDS Foundation is providing support to the Mahlungulu Foundation to expand the provision of direct medical care and treatment at the Mahlungulu Community Care Clinic for residents of the Mbizana region in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. Pangaea’s support will allow Mahlungulu to hire additional trained clinic personnel and increase the clinic hours to 5 days a week, bringing care within reach of poor, rural populations. Julia Martin, MHSc, is Vice President for Programs at Pangaea Global AIDS Foundation. Julia, who has been working on Pangaea projects in Uganda and Ukraine over the past six years, is responsible for the ongoing development and coordination of Pangaea’s programs worldwide. She is based in Washington, D.C. Julia previously coordinated the clinical, prevention, and training programs of the Infectious Diseases Institute (“IDI”) in Kampala, Uganda. More recently, she has been a key member of the Pangaea team working with the Clinton Foundation HIV/AIDS Initiative (“CHAI”) in Ukraine, which is assisting the Ukrainian government in the scale-up of AIDS treatment efforts and methadone maintenance therapy for HIV positive and negative injection drug users.
