From its inception in 2001, Pangaea has focused on establishing and enhancing life-saving care and treatment for people with HIV. Pangaea is proud to have been part of the treatment tidal wave that has brought antiretroviral drugs to approximately 3 million people worldwide. However, the greatest challenges lie ahead. There are still millions of HIV+ people who remain unaware of their status. There are still millions of people who are in need of treatment. Stigma, fear and discrimination against people with HIV are still the reality in many communities around the world. With an estimated 2.5 million new infections each year, investments in prevention are also imperative. Finding solutions to HIV/AIDS is increasingly intertwined with broader social and economic issues. In 2008 it is clearer than ever that we cannot treat AIDS in a vacuum, and that successful, sustainable programs must increasingly address HIV at the societal level. December 1, 2008 marks the 20th anniversary of World AIDS Day. Chevron Corporation hosted a World AIDS Day event for employees at Chevron headquarters in San Ramon to commemorate the occasion. Chevron Vice Chairman Peter Robertson unveiled two new Chevron Global Memorial AIDS quilts dedicated to Chevron employees, family members and friends who have lost their lives to AIDS and discussed the importance of Chevron taking a leadership role in fighting the epidemic. Theogene Rudasingwa, M.D., former Ambassador to the U.S. from Rwanda and now Vice President for Global Affairs at Pangaea Global AIDS Foundation in San Francisco, discussed the impact that AIDS continues to have in sub-Saharan Africa and the critical role that business must play in fighting HIV/AIDS in Africa and around the world. Pangaea has been partnering with Chevron on the ongoing implementation of its global AIDS policy dedicated to providing all employees with training as well as appropriate access to treatment.
