Pangaea to Support China Gates Foundation Program to Develop New Models for HIV Prevention in China

Pangaea Global AIDS Foundation has received a two-year $2.4 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to support efforts by the Chinese Ministry of Health and China-based nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) to create a sustainable model of HIV prevention that demonstrates the feasibility of reducing new HIV infections throughout China.

Over the grant period, Pangaea will provide technical assistance to national partners within the Ministry of Health and selected NGOs to assist them in developing new models for successful HIV prevention.

“Pangaea’s support will focus on bringing HIV-positive persons into a system of care that is equipped to provide a continuum of prevention and treatment services with linkages between NGOs and government health care providers,” said Dr. Dennis Israelski, Chief Medical Officer for Pangaea and Principal of the grant.

Dr. Chris Seebregts Joins Pangaea to Help Launch Global Health Technology Initiatives

On November 25, 2009, Pangaea Global AIDS Foundation announced that Chris Seebregts, PhD, has joined its worldwide team of consultants to provide expertise and leadership for Pangaea’s initiatives related to the scale up of information and communication technologies.

Seebregts, who will serve as Lead Health Technology Consultant for Pangaea, is a Senior Manager in Biomedical Informatics Research in the e-Health Research and Innovation Platform at the South African Medical Research Council, an honorary Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and the Executive Director of Jembi Health Systems, all based in South Africa. He has postgraduate degrees in medical biochemistry, computer science and software engineering and has worked both in the public and private sectors in biomedical and informatics research, information technology management and information systems development.

Pangaea Highlights Human Rights on World AIDS Day 2009

December 1, 2009, was the 21st anniversary of World AIDS Day and this year’s theme, “Universal Access and Human Rights” highlighted the need for countries around the world to address basic human rights issues in the context of the scale-up of HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention programs.

The latest UNAIDS report released in November of 2009, which reports that HIV infections have declined by 17% over the last eight years, offers evidence that global efforts to fight the disease, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, are making headway, but the report also highlights the continuing severe impact of the disease and provides a sobering picture of all that remains to be done. 25 million men, women and children have died of AIDS since the epidemic began and a total of 33 million people around the world now live with HIV.
