Pfizer Inc has provided funding for the construction and development of the new Infectious Diseases Institute (“IDI”) at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda. This facility, which is scheduled to be fully operational in October of 2004, will serve as both a regional HIV clinical training center for physicians and nurses and as a model for the treatment and prevention of AIDS, including the provision of HIV antiretroviral drugs (ARVs), in a resource-limited environment. The IDI is a product of a partnership between the Academic Alliance for AIDS Care and Prevention in Africa, Pangaea, and Pfizer, which provided an initial $11 million construction and program grant for the project.
Hosted by Pangaea President Pat Christen, Pangaea Talk Radio is a series of conversations about important developments in the global fight against HIV/AIDS. These conversations explore issues relating to the development of comprehensive AIDS treatment and care programs, including the provision of antiretroviral drugs, for the millions of people infected with HIV in Africa and the developing world.
